What is colostrum?

Colostrum is the first milk produced by every mammal following the birth of their offspring. As the colostrum is depleted from the mother to the child, "transitional milk" replaces the colostrum in the udder. Because of it's special nature and role in infant development, first day milking is essential.

What is in colostrum that makes it so different from normal milk?

Colostrum is a highly bioactive substance. It is a rich source of Immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM), Growth Factors (IGF-1, IGF-2), and other antimicrobials, including lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase. These substances provide natural defense to the developing immune systems of newborns by promoting growth and providing antibodies against a broad array of potential external pathogens.  Rigorous athletic training is also associated with a slight immunosuppression, including low levels of IgG.

Are these bioactive substances useful to humans?

The beneficial components in colostrum are not species specific, meaning that bovine colostrum is nutritionally and functionally valuable as a human dietary supplement. 

How is intact® processed?

intact® is not pasteurized. Our studies show that subjecting colostrum to extreme heat damages the immunoglobulins (antibodies) and, potentially, the growth factors naturally present in raw colostrum.  The production of intact® utilizes a patented process of low heat treatment while maintaining pharmaceutical grade quality standards. The final product is a concentrated protein supplement, which means that excess fats, salts, and lactose are removed. intact® contains not more than 15% lactose compared to 50% lactose in normal skim milk powder.  Lab tests are conducted on every lot of intact colostrum to ensure that the IgG, for example, is present, "intact" and functional.

How do you know that the beneficial components make it to the gut and are absorbed?

Research trials were conducted to prove that intact® makes it to the gut lining, which is necessary for its bioactivity in the body.  intact® absorption is demonstrated in numerous published studies of animals and humans.  Human clinical trials included both healthy and sick individuals. 

Is supplementation with intact® safe for athletes?

It is generally accepted that high intensity exercise increases protein needs from the basic recommendation of 0.8g of protein per kg of body weight per day to anywhere from 1.2 to 1.8g/kg/day.  This translates to an increased intake by a 200-lb man from 73g of protein per day to as much as 164g to meet the proposed needs of high-intensity endurance and/or strength training.  While most Americans consume more than the baseline recommendation for protein each day, supplemental protein may be needed to achieve the elevated requirements for athletes.  Importantly, supplemental intact at even 60g/day for four weeks did not produce a positive result in an International Olympic Committee doping test for banned substances.

What is a typical dose for athletes and how is intact® consumed?

A serving size of intact® concentrated colostrum powder is 20g/day, which is the effective dose demonstrated in clinical studies.  A tub of intact® provides an approximated months supply.  intact® is mixed like any protein powder in milk, water, or juice.  However, unlike many protein powders, intact® is not adulterated with artificial flavors or sweeteners.  intact has little natural flavor, like a milk powder, and can be blended with fresh fruits, vegetables, or other healthful ingredients.
